The Big Five

For so many of our guests at The Kosher Safari, seeing the Big Five is the absolute highlight of their trip. It’s that iconic African wildlife experience everyone dreams of – and we work hard to make those dreams a reality!

What exactly *are* the Big Five animals?

The Big Five are the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, and Rhinoceros. The name has a fascinating history, originally coined by hunters to describe the most challenging and dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa. Thankfully, today we focus on spotting them, not hunting them!

Where is the best place to see the Big Five on a kosher safari?

It really depends on what you want to see! Different reserves have varying populations of each animal, and I've seen firsthand how that impacts the experience. Here's a quick rundown:

  • Kruger National Park: One of Africa's largest game reserves, Kruger offers excellent chances to see all of the Big Five, though rhinos can be a bit more elusive here than in other parks. The sheer size of Kruger means you'll have a vast area to explore.
  • Pilanesberg National Park: A smaller park than Kruger, Pilanesberg is known for its high density of animals, including rhinos, making sightings relatively common. The landscape is also stunning, formed by an ancient volcanic crater.
  • Other Reserves: Many other smaller private game reserves also offer excellent Big Five viewing opportunities. We carefully select the reserves we work with based on their conservation efforts and the quality of the wildlife experience.

It's important to remember that these are wild animals in their natural habitat. We can never guarantee a sighting, but our experienced guides use their knowledge of animal behaviour and radio communication with other rangers to maximize your chances.

Are the Big Five really dangerous? What safety precautions should I take?

Yes, absolutely. The Big Five are powerful and potentially dangerous animals, and their original name comes from the danger they pose. That's why safety is our top priority on all our game drives.

  • Listen to your guide: Our guides are highly trained professionals who know how to safely approach and observe wildlife. Always follow their instructions.
  • Stay quiet and still: Sudden movements or loud noises can startle animals and provoke a reaction.
  • Keep a safe distance: Our guides will maintain a respectful distance from the animals, but it's important to be aware of your surroundings.
  • Never get out of the vehicle without permission: This should be obvious, but it's worth repeating!

I've seen firsthand the adrenaline rush of encountering a charging elephant (from a safe distance, of course!). It's an incredible experience, but it's crucial to respect the animals and follow safety guidelines.
