The Springbok: South Africa's National Animal
If you're travelling through South Africa, you'll likely encounter the springbok long before you even reach a game reserve. You see them everywhere — on rugby jerseys, adorning logos, and even on pub signs across the country. But believe me, seeing them in the wild, especially when they're pronking, is an entirely different experience. It's one of those sights that just earns a permanent place in your memory. I've seen firsthand how our guests react to this spectacle!
What is pronking, and why is it so special to see?
Pronking — also sometimes called stotting — is the springbok's signature move: a series of high leaps into the air with stiff legs, almost like bouncing. As a guide, I'm often asked why they do it, and honestly, the exact reason is still debated! Here are the leading theories:
- Signalling fitness: It could be a way of telling predators, "Hey, I'm healthy and strong, don't waste your energy trying to catch me."
- Group alarm: It might serve as a signal to the rest of the herd that danger is nearby.
- Social display: It could play a role in establishing dominance within the group.
Whatever the reason, watching a herd of springbok pronk across an open plain is truly one of the most joyful and unforgettable sights in the African bush. It's something we make sure our Kosher Safari guests never miss!
How fast and agile are springbok in the wild?
Springbok are seriously speedy antelopes, some of the fastest in Africa. They can reach speeds of up to 88 km/h in short bursts, and sustain speeds of around 55–60 km/h. But it's not just their speed; it's their agility. They can change direction incredibly quickly, and accelerate suddenly, making them a real challenge for predators. Cheetahs are their most effective predator, but even they have to rely on explosive speed to close the gap before the springbok can get up to full speed.
Where did the name "Springbok" come from?
The name "Springbok" comes from Afrikaans, and it's beautifully simple: "spring" means jump, and "bok" means antelope or goat. It's one of those rare cases where the common name describes the animal perfectly, even better than any scientific description could. It just perfectly captures their essence!
Where are the best places to see springbok in South Africa?
Springbok are found in several reserves across South Africa, but some places offer better viewing opportunities than others. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (Kgalagadi): This is truly one of the best springbok destinations in the country. The arid landscape provides excellent visibility.
- Karoo National Park: This park protects a large section of the Karoo biome, and springbok are very common here.
- Madikwe Game Reserve: This is a great option if you're looking for a Big Five safari experience as well as good springbok sightings.
- Mountain Zebra National Park: As the name suggests, mountain zebra are the main attraction here, but springbok are also abundant.
Keep in mind that they're most active in the cooler parts of the day — early morning and late afternoon. During the dry season, you'll often find them gathering in larger groups near water sources, offering fantastic viewing opportunities. For our kosher travellers, knowing when and where to find them is crucial, as it allows us to plan our safari days efficiently, ensuring we adhere to prayer times and other religious observances.
Springbok were once found in truly enormous migratory herds — the trekbokken — numbering in the tens of millions across the Karoo and Kalahari. Those mass migrations no longer occur, but in the right reserves you can still see herds of several hundred, which gives you a faint sense of what the landscape once held.
The springbok is more than just South Africa's national animal; it's a symbol of the country's resilience and beauty.
